The field

We’re lucky to have access to a private 3-acre field where our dogs can enjoy plenty of off-lead time. When they’re free to run, they burn so much more energy. It’s a relief not having to worry about bumping into other people, encountering a squirrel, or meeting a dog on a lead. We absolutely love our field—and so do the dogs!

The story behind the field

Since becoming a dog walker in 2015, Naomi has dreamed of owning a field where she could exercise the dogs in her care and eventually rent it out to the public as a safe and secure space for people to walk their own dogs.

She bid on several fields over the years but was repeatedly outbid at the last moment—until she found a plot in Cockermouth. It was too good to miss, so she invested all her savings to purchase her dream field. In 2023, she finally became a field owner, but she wasn’t permitted to use it for dog exercise until a “change of use” application was approved by the council.

Two long years later, the application was granted. While she still couldn’t open the field for public hire due to inadequate vehicle access, she was allowed to install six-foot fencing, place a storage container on site, and use the field to exercise the dogs from Lakeland Dog Walker.

Slowly but surely, the field is becoming the perfect exercise space for Naomi and her team.

There is now a 1.25-acre fenced area where dogs that usually can’t be let off the lead can safely run free.

The field also offers fun obstacles for the dogs to explore, along with frisbees, tug toys, and balls to play with.

Naomi has big plans for this space. It will take time, but she is hopeful that, in the future, she’ll be able to open it up to the public.
